17 The Pavement, Clapham, is an early nineteenth-century four-storey shop building facing the eastern part of Clapham Common in the Clapham conservation area of Lambeth. It was Grade II listed in 1955, listing number 1064962. This view shows the interior of the chemist’s that once occupied the shop, Deane and Co Dispensing Chemists, established here by pharmacist Henry Deane in 1837. The business closed in 1986 and the shop is now occupied by Common coffee shop. It retains some of its interior design features, such as the Ionic columns that echo those to its entrance, and its exposed upper flanking wall still has painted signage for Deane & Co Chemists. This colour view, taken after the shop’s closure, shows one of its hardwood display counters, cleared of stock, with empty rotary display units on top. Beyond the counter to the right, the empty shelves to the side wall are shown divided by the Ionic columns. A separate modern shelf unit to the left is headed ‘BABY FOODS’. The shop’s display window has a closed blind, with a suspended glass panel, possibly with neon tube light for a brand. The shop’s doorway to the left is obstructed by a wire mesh sheet and furniture items. Brand stickers in the paired door windows include ‘TRY Oraldene’.
