Title
Interior of a chemist’s shop in The Pavement
Description
17 The Pavement, Clapham, is an early nineteenth-century four-storey shop building facing the eastern part of Clapham Common in the Clapham conservation area of Lambeth. It was Grade II listed in 1955, listing number 1064962. This view shows the interior of the chemist’s that once occupied the shop, Deane and Co Dispensing Chemists, established here by pharmacist Henry Deane in 1837. The business closed in 1986 and the shop is now occupied by Common coffee shop. It retains some of its interior design features, such as the Ionic columns that echo those to its entrance, and its exposed upper flanking wall still has painted signage for Deane & Co Chemists. This colour behind-the-counter view, taken after the shop’s closure, shows the mostly cleared shelves and hardwood-fronted drawer and cabinet units to one wall of the shop. The drawer fronts have numerical plates in traditional typography. A poster about NHS prescription charges is attached to a cabinet door. Some cornice detail and two of the Ionic columns are also shown.
