17 The Pavement, Clapham, is an early nineteenth-century four-storey shop building facing the eastern part of Clapham Common in the Clapham conservation area of Lambeth. It was Grade II listed in 1955, listing number 1064962. This view shows the interior of the chemist’s that once occupied the shop, Deane and Co Dispensing Chemists, established here by pharmacist Henry Deane in 1837. The business closed in 1986 and the shop is now occupied by Common coffee shop. It retains some of its interior design features, such as the Ionic columns that echo those to its entrance, and its exposed upper flanking wall still has painted signage for Deane & Co Chemists. This colour view, taken after the shop’s closure, shows what appears to be the pharmacist’s much-stained hardwood workbench, with some abandoned jars, funnels, and other specialist vessels, some of which are stored on a rack with projecting tapered spigots. An inset ceramic sink has a crooked tap with a single stopcock. Beyond, the shelves to the back wall have been cleared of stock, with what appears to be an electric heater fitted to the lower shelves. A traditional clock with Roman numerals is also shown on the back wall.
