Description
Pitcairn Street was a side road off Wandsworth Road, since redeveloped as the Heath Road estate, the new road names celebrating the Black British athletes who took part in the 1984 Olympics. This view looks north down the street towards Heath Road, since truncated and incorporated into the Heath Road and Willard estates. It shows terraces to either side of the street of mid-to-late nineteenth century two-storey brick cottages with shallow front yards boarded with corrugated sheets, presumably anticipating demolition. The T-junction at the far end of the street reveals two-storey terraced cottages of similar age on Heath Road, also lost to subsequent redevelopment. The tower block shown beyond is Park South on Austin Road, which, together with the flats of the Doddington & Rollo estate to its right, offer a useful visual orientation point. Also shown parked in the street are a Ford Escort van, an MGB GT, a BMC 1100, and a Bedford CA ambulance.
