This view looking northeast from the common near Holy Trinity Church in the Clapham conservation area of Lambeth shows two sides of the The Polygon, effectively an island terrace, in particular numbers 3 to 8. The three-storey terrace at numbers 6, 7 and 8 were Grade II listed in 1974, listing number 1064964 and date back to the early-to-mid eighteenth century. The corner building comprising 5, 5a, and 5b The Polygon has since been extended by a single storey. Number 4 appears to have since been redeveloped or remodelled. Maritime House, shown in the background to the left of view, was built in 1939 as the headquarters for the National Union of Seamen and now serves as office and residential accommodation. The post-war building shown beyond the trees to the right of view has since been redeveloped and the southeast corner of The Polygon, lost during the war to bomb damage, has been redeveloped in a neo-Georgian style. Partly visible to the right is The Lodge, which served as Clapham’s fire station between 1868-1902. One of the earliest purpose-built fire stations in the UK, it was Grade II listed in 2004, listing number 1391171.
