Title
Villa in Palace Road
Description
The villa at 31 Palace Road was the home of Lieutenant Commander William George “Bill” Boaks (1904-1986). Described as ‘a pioneer of British eccentric political campaigning’ he lost deposits in twenty-eight elections and used a bicycle fitted with placards in preference to door-knocking to campaign for road safety. He lived with his wife at the villa until losing his life ironically following a road traffic accident. Palace Road was a private road until the 1970s, when most of the Victorian villas of the original Roupell Estate including number 31 were lost to redevelopment. This view shows the rear of the villa, with a gable end to the right of its northeast facing elevation, which has a two-storey canted bay with a single window for the gabled attic level above and a pair of patio doors to the centre. There is a single door to the centre of the elevation and windows at offset height above presumably serving a a stairwell, and windows serving the rooms to the ground and first floors. The brickwork surrounding the windows is slightly cambered and of a darker tone to the rest of the brickwork. There is a narrow single-storey extension to the left flank of the rear elevation. The site is now occupied by Baly House on the Palace Road Estate.
