Shops in The Pavement
Description
This view shows a row of three-storey mid-nineteenth-century shopfronts at 7-10 The Pavement in the Clapham conservation area of Lambeth. The building at 9 The Pavement shown centre view as ‘THE OUTSIZE HOUSE Limited’ has similar features to the adjacent block of three symmetrically arranged frontages at numbers 6-8. The brick facades of the upper storeys have prominent quoins and grand window surrounds with a mix of pointed and arched pediments, and ornamental balconies to each window. Number 9’s windows are less grand only having a single arched pediment to its first-floor central window. A notice in its modern shop window shows that the business has moved to number 5, the rest of the window being obscured by an Austin or Morris J2 ‘POST OFFICE TELEPHONES’ van parked in the street. An estate agent board projects from a first-floor window directing all enquiries to ‘DOUGLAS YOUNG AND COMPANY, 213 CLAPHAM ROAD, SW9’. To the right, 8 The Pavement is shown as ‘DER Television Rentals’, some cathode ray tube television sets just visible on display, with ‘EMERALD STAFF AGENCY’ occupying the offices above. A bus stop sign is mounted on a concrete lamp post outside with a disc above showing ‘A’ and one of the two routes on the stop as ‘37’. An awning obscures the adjacent shop at number 7. The shop just visible to the left at number 10 is shown as Evans, possibly closed also, and is in a building of similar age and scale having stucco frontage with indented blockwork and ornate iron railings to its second-floor casement windows. Recent images show the frontages in better condition with a grocery, wholefood shop, and Chinese street food shops now trading in the shops below.
