Shops in The Pavement
Description
Beyond the modern ground floor front extension shown to the right as the shopfront of ‘THE OUTSIZE HOUSE – DIVISION OF EVANS THE OUTSIZE SHOP’, the three-storey brick fronted house with casement windows at 5 The Pavement in the Clapham conservation area of Lambeth was the home of Zachary Macauley (1768-1838). During his time in Sierra Leone and Jamaica he saw for himself the horrors of slavery. He became a leading abolitionist, contributing statistical evidence and eyewitness accounts that were critical in winning Parliamentary debate that led to the passing of the Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade in 1807, and its subsequent enforcement. Just out of view, a stone plaque set in the 1930s in the upper-storey brickwork commemorates Macauley and his son Lord Thomas Babington Macauley (1800-1859). The shop window displays a few manikins with women’s outfits and overcoats. 5 The Pavement is listed locally. The shop buildings shown at 6-7 The Pavement are part of a terrace of three-storey mid-nineteenth-century shopfronts of similar style. The brick facades of the upper storeys have prominent quoins and grand window surrounds with a mix of pointed and arched pediments. The shops have awnings, the menswear shop at number 6 having a modern tiled facade with ‘ARTHUR KNOCK’ set in relief, its display window showing a range of goods and, curiously, a panel to the side displaying two pairs of underpants. Number 7’s display is less visible, but there are several packaged and labelled goods and the words ‘BOOBY TRAP’ with an arrow pointing downwards appears to have been hand painted on the glass. Some raincoated pedestrians are also shown.
