This view shows the shopfronts at numbers 19-22 The Pavement facing the eastern part of Clapham Common in the Clapham conservation area of Lambeth. To the left of view, the pair of three-storey with mansard roof extensions are shown as ‘SOUTHSIDE FRUITERS’ at number 22 on the corner of Bromell’s Road, and at number 21 a hairdressing shop with a split hoarding showing ‘LADIES HAIR FASHIONS by Ronald MAC 4044’ and GENTLEMAN’S SALON – MAC 0576’. Believed to be mid-nineteenth century, their upper floors have stucco detailing, tiled bands, and ornate iron sill guards. A Bedford TK lorry is shown parked in front of the fruiterers, its open platform apparently cleared, and a man with long dark coat and flared trousers stands by the hairdresser’s shop door. To the centre of view, building work is shown in progress at number 20, a bricklayer building a flanking wall above the single-storey roof of an empty shop, with scaffolding shown in place beyond. The opening at the front of the shop is part-cordoned with builder’s boards and a sign above shows ‘NOVACON BUILDING LTD’. A three-storey with mansard extension building stands on this site today. To the right of view, a pair of two-storey with attic buildings, believed to be eighteenth-century, have projecting single-storey shops, number 19 shown as ‘PERKINS FAMILY BUTCHER’, its striped awning shading its display window. Sadly, 18-19 The Pavement were destroyed by fire in 1999 and the site boarded up for two decades, although successive planning applications have been submitted, the most recent for a new shop and residential development to be built in keeping with the character of The Pavement shopfronts. Just in view to the right, the rear of a Peugeot 403 saloon is shown parked in the street.
