Villa in Park Hill
Description
This view shows a detached two-storey with semi-basement mid-nineteenth century villa at 72 Park Hill in the Clapham Park and Northbourne Road conservation area of Lambeth. It has a balustraded parapet, painted frontage three windows wide with symmetrical layout and a central enclosed entrance porch. Its side extension has hoarding above its garage doors showing it as the business premises of ‘A.OWEN – ELECTRICAL DIVISION’. Four vans are shown parked in the sloping forecourt, including two Ford Transit Customs with different sized bodies. The white painted boundary wall has since been replaced with traditional railings. Together with a similar villa at number 74, the grounds to the rear and in between were developed as works premises, occupied by the Allard Motor Company between 1946 and 1966, who produced 1,902 mostly performance cars in a range of models. It ceased trading when founder and former Monte Carlo Rally winner Sydney Allard (1910-66) died at home after a long illness. Allard Gardens, a four-storey residential development built in the 1990s, now occupies the factory site. The villa and its extension have since been renovated and converted to residential use, the villa being Grade II listed in 1976, listing number 1065004.
