Title
Cottages in Parkfields
Description
Located in a narrow lane in a comparatively secluded area of suburban Putney, Parkfields Cottages were built by Henry Scarth (1807-1871) in the mid nineteenth century. Originally semi-detached, they are stock brick with slate roofs and are listed locally. This view shows the pair of cottages at numbers 9 and 11 on the west side of the lane, with the flanking wall of number 7 and its two-storey side extension in the background. Number 11 is shown with shutters to the sides of its windows, since removed, although the tall shrub, thought to be Magnolia, has grown since. It has a single-storey parapeted side extension set back from the front elevation incorporating an arched entrance door and a garage. The paved drive has an offset pair of timber open diamond pattern gates. The extension has been replaced by a two-storey residential extension with an open driveway. The shared chimney stack is shown with a cluster of tall chimney pots, retained today. The Parkfields conservation area of Wandsworth extends beyond the lane, incorporating commercial premises of similar age where Parkfields joins the Upper Richmond Road, and the Victorian villas across the road to the east, which are more typical of the locality.
