Description
Ponsonby Road in the Roehampton Village Conservation Area of Wandsworth was first laid out on the edge of Putney Heath in 1863. This view shows a row of villas of differing scale and style at numbers 4, 5 and 6 Ponsonby Road. Number 6 to the left is a corner building on the right-angle bend in Ponsonby Road and its frontage faces Holy Trinity Parish Church, out of view to the left. The end elevation shown has a brick face, a central chimney breast, its stack projecting through a tiled mansard roof which has a single dormer to the right, and single offset windows to each floor below, the ground floor’s having a pointed arch. Number 5 is shorter although of three storeys, with a gabled rendered front and square casement windows, the ground floor’s being of offset sizes. The entrance presents from a narrow single-storey side extension. The villa at number 4 is one of a two-storey pair, shown with a console bracketed cornice to its entrance and a band extending across the front and flanking elevation. The section to the left of the entrance is thought to be an extension incorporating the hipped roof. Cars shown parked in the road include a Hillman Imp, a Volkswagen Beetle, a Morris Minor convertible, and two BMC Minis.
