Description
Ponsonby Road in the Roehampton Village Conservation Area of Wandsworth was first laid out on the edge of Putney Heath in 1863. This view shows the pair of two-storey villas that still stand at 3 and 4 Ponsonby Road, named Laurel Villas on the plaque set in the upper centre of the rendered and painted frontage, each side having a different colour. The door and ground floor window surrounds have console bracketed cornices above which a band extends across the villas, overlapped by the upper floor windowsills. Number 4 appears to have a side extension with a single window to the ground floor and altered roofline, disrupting the symmetry of the pair. Number 3 is also extended by a two-storey brick fronted garage, set back from the front of the villa to form a drive where a Ford Corsair is shown parked. The shallow front gardens have a boundary hedge and capped wall, which shows the slope of the road. Cars shown parked in the street include a Triumph Herald estate, a Ford Cortina, and a Vauxhall Viva HB.
