Title
Roehampton Estate in Pleasance Road
Description
Roehampton Estate was built on the former Putney Park land by the London County Council in the 1920s subsidised through the Housing Act of 1919 in response to the post-war housing shortage. Inspired by the Garden City Movement, the estate comprised 1,215 homes consisting of cottages styled with subtle variations, laid out with plenty of green space between clusters of cottages and privet hedged boundaries to give a village ambience. The estate also incorporated allotments, shops, and a school to create a self-sufficient community. Putney Park House and many of the former Putney Park estate trees were retained in the scheme. The Roehampton estate now forms the Dover House Estate conservation area of Wandsworth. This view shows the terrace at 59-65 Pleasance Road, its Courtrai tiled roof having an offset-slope to the first floor with a single dormer to each cottage. The end cottages have side entrances, while the two mid-terrace cottages are served by a shared recessed entrance. The front gardens share a low informally shaped privet hedge offending a sense of uniformity, since lost to individual efforts, and number 59 now has a two-storey flat roofed extension that further upsets the overall balance of the terrace.
