17 The Pavement, Clapham, is an early nineteenth-century four-storey shop building facing the eastern part of Clapham Common in the Clapham conservation area of Lambeth. It was Grade II listed in 1955, listing number 1064962. This view shows the interior of the shop, occupied by Deane and Co Dispensing Chemists, established here by pharmacist Henry Deane in 1837. The shelves to the back wall, glazed display cabinets to one side wall, and the shop counter, present an impressive range of products. The Doric columns shown dividing the display shelving into compartments, mostly surviving today, echo those to either side of shop’s central entrance out of view. The top shelf has large display jars and boxes, the latter showing labels for various ailments, neatly spaced alternately. The counter, which is also well-stocked has restricted workspace, a cash register to its centre showing 3’ 10d, and an array of labelled drawers. A traditional clock with Roman numerals offers a centrepiece for the display. The business closed in 1986 and the shop is now occupied by Common coffee shop.
