View over the roof tops of buildings on Middlesex Street, Spitalfields, in the former Metropolitan Borough of Stepney, looking east along New Goulston Street. 109 to 143 Wentworth Dwellings on the far side of Goulston Street, were built c1886, and renamed Arcadia Court following refurbishment c1991. Shops at the ground floor between the stairways include Ralph Swimer Limited, clothing wholesaler, Israeli Restaurant, luncheonette and a hot salt beef bar. 181 to 280 Brunswick Buildings, were renamed Brunswick House c1976 after being rebuilt, and is visible on the right, with a vacant plot opposite to the rear of Wentworth Dwellings in Wentworth Street. The end gable wall and stairs of Goulston baths is visible on the right of the rear access road ahead, since demolished after previously suffering bomb damage during World War II and now the site of the London Metropolitan University law and business school. The 22-storey Denning Point tower block built c1968, the sole survivor of the original New Holland Estate, is visible behind. The concrete-framed six-storey commercial building at 1 to 7 Brick Lane is visible in the background, with the 19-storey Pauline House in Old Montague Street in the distance. The roof turrets of the c1900 School Board for London's Canon Barnett Primary School on the far side of Commercial Street are just visible above the roof tops of Brunswick Buildings. Vehicles parked in the surrounding streets include a Morris Marina van, BMC Austin 1100 and MG 1300 models, a Volvo 140 series saloon, an Austin-Morris 250 JU box van, and a Ford Escort Mk 1 van. The vacant plot has since been landscaped and developed with low-rise housing at 20 to 27 Wentworth Dwellings. Wentworth Street is a conservation area, designated in 1989.
