Title
The Bell public house and Brunswick Buildings in New Goulston Street
Description
View of Truman's The Bell public house and 233 to 280 Brunswick Buildings, looking east along New Goulston Street, Spitalfields, in the former Metropolitan Borough of Stepney, from the corner with Middlesex Street. The single-storey cafe building can be seen on the right in the gap between the pub and the late-Victorian tenement buildings. Most of Brunswick Buildings were destroyed by a V1 bomb during World War II. The block at the end of the terrace on the corner with Goulston Street was rebuilt c1950 and has windows of a later design. Denning Point tower block, built c1968, is visible beyond and is the sole survivor of the original New Holland Estate. The gable end of Goulston baths is visible in front, since demolished after previously suffering bomb damage during World War II and now the site of the London Metropolitan University law and business school. Denim jeans, lumberjack shirts and coats can be seen hanging outside the corner shop at 52 Middlesex Street, which partially obscures the end block of 132 to 143 Wentworth Dwellings at the end of the street. Wentworth Street is a conservation area, designated in 1989.
