View across the roof tops of Wentworth Street, Spitalfields, in the former Metropolitan Borough of Stepney, looking east, probably, from the top-floor flats on the Middlesex Street Estate. Wentworth Dwellings, together with the four-storey buildings on the corner with Middlesex Street, can be seen in the foreground, with shops at the ground floor at 16 to 28 Wentworth Street. Built c1886 and renamed Merchant House c1991 after refurbishment. Also, 61 to 72 Wentworth Dwellings at 6 to 14 Wentworth Street, rebuilt c1950 after being destroyed by bombing during World War II. Brunswick Buildings in New Goulston Street can be seen to the right, renamed Brunswick House c1976 after being rebuilt. Stalls of Petticoat Lane Market are just visible in the street to the left. Shops along the south side of the market include Jakki, wholesale and retail clothing. Buildings visible behind include the point blocks of Denning Point in Commercial Street, centre view, the concrete-framed six-storey commercial building at 1 to 7 Brick Lane, far left, and probably, Richard Seifert's c1963 eight-storey Brunning House at 100 Spitalfields. To the left of the tower block, are the roof turrets of the c1900 School Board for London's Canon Barnett Primary School, off Commercial Street. The belltower of the c1960s Grade II listed, entry 1445649, Roman Catholic church of St Boniface in Adler Street is visible to the right of the tower block. The c1964 housing blocks of Shadwell can be seen in the distance which includes the 22-storey, Luke House, the 24-storey Gelston Point (demolished late 1990's due to structural defects), the 24-storey Winterton House, possibly, the c1956 eight-storey Delafield House, and c1968 nine-storey Harkness House. Much of the area has been redeveloped with many of the buildings in the view, replaced. Wentworth Street is a conservation area, designated in 1989.
