Description
Front elevation of a detached house with a fenced front garden at 232 Balham High Road, Wandsworth, looking north-west. A canopy covers part of the main entrance steps with iron railings either side. The house in constructed of common brick stock over two storeys and a basement, with sash windows and window sill band course. A se- back range is seen at both sides of the front elevation, with brick filled arches over gated entrances. In the foreground are workmen relaying the carriageway. One mad dressed in a cap and jacket and trousers with upright starched collar and tie holds a measuring stick upright. To his left is a blurred figure of another workman, whilst on the right-hand side is a workman laying rectangular wooden blocks on top of a course of lime mortar. The blocks are laid from the granite kerbstone and away from the gulley drain. Hoggin or suchlike is used below the lime mortar course as can be seen to the left with what is perhaps the main gas supply pipe to number 232 visible in the road. This building no longer exists, having been replaced by Block A of Du Cane Court.
