Shops in Newington Green
Description
Front elevation of 35 and 35A Newington Green, Stoke Newington. A three-story brick house with projecting shops on the ground floor added in the nineteenth century. The house may be one of six built on the north-east corner of the green by 1690: it contains elements that date to this time (fireplaces and panelling match contemporary work at Hampton Court), although other factors suggest it dates from c1720. Its carved oak staircase was removed and sold in the US in 1927 by the architectural salvager Charles Roberson, possibly to William Randolph Hearst, who regularly bought from Roberson. Joseph Hibbard and Sons was established in Newington Green in 1860, specialising in removals, warehousing and estate agency, and also as auctioneers, valuers and surveyors, opening a subsidiary in Brentwood, Essex, in 1921. Next to it is a branch of the Royal London Mutual Insurance Society. Numbers 35 and 35A are Grade II listed; listing number 1265593.
