Houses in Hanbury Street
Description
Numbers 24-26 Hanbury Street, Spitalfields, three-storey early eighteenth-century houses with continuous dormers. They are brown brick built with red brick dressings and have three sash windows under gauged flat arches to the first and second floors. Number 26 has a wooden shop front with pilasters and entablature with architrave. Number 24 has ground floor stucco with scrolls and cornicing. These two houses are Grade II listed; listing number 1357819. Just visible to the right is Hanbury Hall. Originally built in 1719 as a French Huguenot Church, it became a German Lutheran Church in 1787, and in 1887 Christ Church Spitalfields bought the building as its church hall. John Wesley preached here, Charles Dickens gave public readings here, and Annie Besant and Eleanor Marx-Aveling held matchstick girls' strike meetings here.
