A view of Goodman's Yard, Whitechapel, looking west from Mansell Street, towards The Minories and trains parked at platforms in Fenchurch Street Station.
Goodman's Yard is cobbled and there are numerous cars parked on adjacent plots of land which are derelict due to severe bombing during World War II. Cars are also parked amongst rows of garages and lock-ups on the north side of Goodman's Yard.
The vacant plot in the foreground, with a large hoarding advertising Embassy No1, was the site of a goods and parcel office of The London & South Western Railway, and also of The George public house, which stood on the corner under a curved lattice viaduct that carried the Haydon Square extension of the London & North Eastern Railway. Remains of the viaduct can be seen in the right foreground, with vegetation growing on the disused track.
The large plot of land on the left, running alongside the viaduct of the London & Blackwall Railway into Fenchurch Street Station, was a goods depot for the Great Eastern Railway.
The building dominating the right hand background is Ibex House, which was built between 1933 and 1937 in the Streamlined Moderne style of Modernist architecture, popularised by the Odeon Cinema Chain. This eleven-storey office block is Grade II listed; listing number 1252467.
Most other buildings seen here do not exist. Goodman's Yard is now merely a four-lane street running east between Minories and Mansell Street. It is part of a one-way traffic system, with the road surface literally sitting atop the vacant plots on the left.
An office block was built between the southern edge of the realigned Goodman's Yard and the railway viaduct, and this has latterly been converted into a Travelodge. Bus stands for the 'Heritage 15 Route' sit outside. The tall building with an exposed stairwell has been replaced by Urbanest student accommodation. A large office complex and small green space occupy the site of the low level garages and overgrown railway viaduct.
