Title
Brunswick Buildings in Goulston Street
Description
A view looking south down Goulston Street, Whitechapel, taken from the junction of New Goulston Street, with various cars parked in the road. Brunswick Buildings, a five-storey block of flats with basements, is in the foreground. It was built on the west side of Goulston Street, and into New Goulston Street in the late 1880s. Most of Brunswick Buildings were destroyed by a V2 Rocket during World War II. The corner block seen here was rebuilt and has windows of a later design. There is a large advert for Beanis Hosiery Sales on the ground-floor wall. The remaining original section of Brunswick Buildings has a central archway leading to a courtyard beyond, and a balconied stairwell can be seen with washing on a clothes line. These dwellings were demolished in 1976 and their name is commemorated in Brunswick House which now partly covers the site. The 1960s office building and its tower block, which were built on the site of the bombed Brunswick Buildings, have in turn been demolished and replaced by a Travelodge.
