Christchurch Hall in Hanbury Street
Description
A view of Hanbury Hall (Christchurch Hall) in Hanbury Street, Spitalfields. Originally built in 1719 as a French Huguenot Church, it became a German Lutheran Church in 1787, and in 1887 Christ Church Spitalfields bought the building as its church hall. John Wesley preached here, Charles Dickens gave public readings here, and Annie Besant and Eleanor Marx-Aveling held matchstick girls' strike meetings here. Next door are the premises of Powells Fruit & Vegetables, 20-22 Hanbury Street. This is a four-storey, double-fronted building with a shop front either side of a central doorway which has columns and a pediment. 'Paper & Bags' is painted into the brickwork between the first and second floors. There is a car parked in the street.
