Title
British Sailors' Society Mission in Commercial Road
Description
The British Sailors' Society Mission, 739-747 Commercial Road, Stepney, on the corner with Salmon Lane. Five-storey end towers have four-storey blocks inbetween. The block on the Commercial Road elevation has a row of four arches with four windows on each of the three floors above. The main entrance has turrets each side that extend the height of the towers. The entranceway has four doors within an arch, below a longer arch with windows and a nameboard reading 'King Edward VII Hall'. The name of the British Sailors Society sits in large letters above this, inbetween the castellations that top the towers. Opened in 1924, it was originally known as the Empire Memorial Sailors' Hostel. With the closure of the Docks in the 1960s and 1970s, the Hostel lost its seamen and closed in 1979. The building was sold, renamed Prince's Lodge, and became a home for the homeless, until closing in 1985. The Grade II listed building has since been converted into 50 private flats and renamed The Mission. Beyond the Mission an Esso petrol station can be seen. This has been replaced by flats.
