Numbers 697-707 Commercial Road, Stepney, part of the remaining section of a terrace of three-storey early nineteenth-century houses with basements, and a single-storey public house. The houses are stock brick built with rusticated stucco ground floors, and have steps with railings up to the panelled front doors, which have fanlights, round-headed surrounds, and either plain or fluted pilasters. All windows are sashes with a round-headed ground floor surround and moulded stucco architraves to the first floor. Number 703 has juliet balconies on the first floor. Number 699 has a shop front at street level, Vera's Cafe. Just visible to the left is the Sir Charles Napier public house, a Watneys Brewery pub dating from 1877, which closed in 1997, and was demolished in 2003. A new house has been built on its site in an identical fashion to the rest of the terrace. Number 699 has been restored to a house, and all the houses have been renovated, with iron railings to their fronts. With the exception of number 701, all now have juliet balconies to their first-floor windows along with scrolls and plinths. Numbers 699-711 of this terrace are Grade II listed; listing number 1065238.
