Description
A view of numbers 368-376 Commercial Road, Stepney, between what were Hardinge and Johnson Streets, with a zebra crossing in the foreground. Number 376 is a vacant site with corrugated iron. Number 374 is a Printers & Stationers with a ground-floor shop front in a three-storey, early nineteenth-century house with stuccoed facade, first-floor balcony and basement. The Conservative Party Offices are at number 372, with a banner that reads 'Vote Greenway' across the first-floor balcony. This is a three-storey early nineteenth-century stock-brick built house with basement. It has a round-headed doorway with a mask keystone, a decorated impost band and fanlight. Number 370 is a similar house with juliet balconies at the first floor and a basement. It has recessed windows with arched heads on the ground floor and a tunnel entrance with fluted engaged columns. Number 368 is a branch of The Trustee Savings Bank. It has the name London Savings Bank across its top level. The three-storey brown brick building has a ground-floor facade of grey stone, with a heavy portico to the door with pediment and panelled balcony behind. The ground floor has side pilasters and windows with round arches, architrave, keystone and impost bands. Numbers 368-374 are all Grade II listed. A new building has been erected on the vacant site at 376. The former bank is now The Jubilee Street Practice, with a side entrance in a grassed area where the truncated Johnson Street once met Commercial Road.
