View of Commercial Road
Description
A view looking west along Commercial Road, Stepney, dominated by the Wesleyan Central Hall. Opened as a seamen's chapel from 1881, the Stepney Central Hall was operating as a cinema by the Wesleyan Mission from 1912. It was closed as a cinema in late 1943 and reverted back to a mission hall. The Commercial Road frontage still exists but the main hall was knocked down to build flats. It stands today as Marlin Apartments. Just visible on the left is The Troxy Cinema. The buildings seen beyond Central Hall on the right have all been demolished and Mountmorres Road, which ran through them no longer exists. The site is now occupied by Old Church Road and Avis Square housing estates. The Commercial Rubber India Company occupies the plot in the foreground just east of Central Hall. This site on the corner of Bromley Street would for many years become Ford Zenith motor sales. It is now Tower Hamlets Car Pound. Commercial Road can be seen to be untarmacked and trolleybus cables run above the road.
