Description
Numbers 582-592 Commercial Road, Stepney, a terrace of three-storey houses with dormers and basements. The houses have juliet balconies, iron railings and steps leading to the front doors which have fluted column surrounds and arched fanlights above. The side wall of number 592, on the corner with Branch Road, is completely covered in large bill posters, including one for Lyles Golden Syrup. This house and number 590 next door are surrounded with boarding, the houses both awaiting demolition. These two houses were demolished to make way for the widening of Branch Road in preparation of the opening of the Rotherhithe Tunnel in 1908. The two lanes of the northbound carriageway of Branch Road, and its pavement, now sit directly on their site. Numbers 582-588 still exist with Grade II listing; listing number 1240042.
