Title
Houses in XX Place
Description
A terrace of ten houses at 1-10 XX Place, Spitalfields. XX Place, a London street with arguably the strangest name, no longer exists; it used to run south out of Globe Road, just east of Stayner's Road. Built in 1842 for locally employed workers, most of whom worked at the nearby Charringtons Brewery, the entire street comprised just those ten houses. The local name for the street was 2X Place or Double X Place. It is claimed the name derives from a strong beer style called XX or double X.
