Title
Houses in Spital Square
Description
View of houses at 36-38 Spital Square, Spitalfields, looking south. Numerous broken window panes are seen in number 37. Number 36 has a jib crane on the first-floor front wall and number 38 is the offices of J. Collins & Sons Ltd, basket makers established 1886. A street lamp standard is covered with a blackout shroud between these two houses (Grade II listed, entry number 1065057) and an Austin 14/6 four-door saloon car is parked outside. All these buildings still exist. Spital Square was at the heart of the St John and Tillard estate; a development of grand houses, mostly occupied by silk merchants and master weavers and largely demolished in the 1920s and 1930s.
