Shops in Royal Mint Street
Description
Shops at 3-6 Royal Mint Street, City of London, viewed from Shorter Street looking east. At the right is an advert for Siberia’s Plunging Horses, a circus act shown at the London Hippodrome (now the Hippodrome Casino) in Cranbourn Street in November 1900. The show told the story of prisoners escaping from Siberia. The horses were those of officers pursuing them and they plunged into a flooded river. There is also an advert for Bruton & Co, advertising contractors. The first shop is S Blow, builder, warehouse and office fitter and general repairer. His shop has two entrance doors, which he has numbered 3 and 3½. The shop has iron railings in front of its door and windows and its upper storey and attic are cladded with wooden planks. At number 4 is Tidmarsh & Brown, potters and glass manufacturers. In all the shop windows are adverts for sale prices. Number 5 is a china shop. It has a double bay window and a hoist to a warehouse loading bay on the attic floor. Only the upper floors are visible of number 6. All the buildings have attics with dormer windows. There is a man outside S Blow’s, a man and a boy outside numbers 3-3½, five men and a boy outside number 4 and a man sitting on a horse-drawn cart across the road from number 4. Three of the men and the two boys are wearing flat caps; two of the men are wearing bowler hats. There is a Bush & Darling Company’s horse-drawn cart full of hay standing outside S Blow’s with a Shire horse harnessed to it.
