Shorter Street and Royal Mint Street
Description
Royal Mint Street, Shadwell, viewed from Shorter Street looking east. On the left is a Brutalist municipal car park on the corner of Shorter Street and Mansell Street, built in 1968-69 on the site of a former goods depot. On the right is a badly damaged wall and then one side of the Rising Sun pub. The Whitbread pub is on an island at the junction of Royal Mint Street, Mansell Street, Shorter Street and Tower Hill. The pub opened in 1839 as the Sun; its address then was 7 Sharp’s (or Sharpe’s) Buildings. It became the Rising Sun in 1915 and its address 12 Royal Mint Street. There are two advertising billboards near the pub. Beyond, two buildings in the Royal Mint site can be seen, one of which is the seamen’s registry building. This was listed Grade II in 1985, listing number 1241797. There are five saloon cars, an estate car, a Mini and a van in the photo. The pub was closed and demolished in 1969 and the Royal Mint site is in process of being developed to become a Chinese Embassy.
