Title
Houses and school in Ropery Street
Description
The backs of houses at numbers 11 to 21 Ropery Street and Bonner Primary School, Mile End, viewed from near number 11 looking south-east. Outside number 11 in a large open space, a metal single bed base is leaning against the high back yard wall. The wall ends outside 13 so a one-storey outhouse in the back yard is visible. From 13, a high-rise block of flats can be seen beyond Ropery Street. From 15 to 21, there is an aluminium fence but the roofs of outhouses in the back yards are visible over the top of it. At the end of the terrace on the left a man is standing near the wall of Bonner Primary School. This used to be South Grove School and is on the Twine Terrace part of Ropery Street. It is composed of two buildings, the smaller one built in 1874 designed by ER Robson as a primary school, the larger built in 1904 designed by TS Bailey as a secondary school. The schools became Avery College and then the Professional Development Centre and are now Bonner Primary School. During the time of the Professional Development Centre, in 2009 the buildings were listed Grade II, listing number 1393588. The houses and school still exist and have been renovated.
