Title
House in St Mark Street
Description
Front and side view of 5 St Mark Street, corner of St Mark Street and North Tenter Street, Aldgate, viewed from the junction of the two streets looking north-east. The house is 3 storeys and a small area gate on the North Tenter Street side indicates that there is also a lower ground floor though access has been blocked. There are two steps up to the front door, which is arched, with a semicircular fanlight. Also on each side of the front door are small brass or wood boards. To the left of the front door is a gate giving entry to a small yard. On the yard wall, left-hand window and wall at the right near the street sign are some graffiti: the names of Gary, Tony and Alan. The street sign’s supports are askew. On North Tenter Street, the ground-floor windows are boarded up with sheet aluminium. St Mark Street was built in 1829 on part of the Goodman’s Fields farmland. St Mark’s was a church built in the early nineteenth century to create a new parish because the population of the area had grown. North Tenter Street is named after the tenter grounds that were used to hold large pieces of cloth hung up to dry after being woven and washed, Aldgate being one of the areas where many Huguenot weavers lived. The house at 5 St Mark Street still exists though it is in a dilapidated condition, with several metal bolts supporting its front wall. The windows on St Mark Street have been blocked up and the two boards removed. The low wall on North Tenter Street has been replaced by iron railings and the small gate into the ‘area’ has been moved to the right.
