Title
Rising Sun public house in Royal Mint Street
Description
Side and front view of the Rising Sun pub in Royal Mint Street, City of London, looking east from near Tower Hill. The Whitbread pub is on an island at the junction of Royal Mint Street, Mansell Street, Shorter Street and Tower Hill. The pub opened in 1839 as the Sun; its address then was 7 Sharp’s (or Sharpe’s) Buildings. It became the Rising Sun in 1915 and its address became 12 Royal Mint Street. At each side of the pub are billboards. The one on the right says “Haven’t you seen this poster somewhere before?” The one on the left is blank and beside it is a telephone box. Beyond the pub two buildings in the Royal Mint site can be seen, one of which is the seamen’s registry building. This was listed Grade II in 1985, listing number 1241797. There are a saloon car and an estate car in Royal Mint Street, three saloon cars on the right in Mansell Street and a truck turning left from Royal Mint Street into Mansell Street. The pub closed sometime after 1969 and demolished after 1978, and the Royal Mint site is in the process of being developed to become a Chinese Embassy.
