Title
Block of flats in Royal Mint Square
Description
Block of flats at 146-185 Royal Mint Square, Shadwell, viewed from the Square looking east. The flats are five-storey with both sash and bay windows. They were built on the five-acre site in 1887-8 by Pink, Fryer & Co with the Metropolitan Industrial Dwelling Company as accommodation for skilled Royal Mint employees. Their original plans had to be modified because part of the site had been the Aldgate Burial Ground which belonged to St Botolph Aldgate Church. There is a window box containing flowers in the flat at top left of the photo, some flowers in a window of a ground-floor flat next to the entrance to the flats and one tree in the courtyard. In the middle of the courtyard is a large block of brick and concrete. At bottom left there is a street art figure painted on the wall. Behind this, “No Parking” is painted on the front wall of a ground-floor flat. Two saloon cars, an estate car, a Bedford van and two cycles are parked in front. There are a girl and a woman near the cars and the woman is restraining a dog. In the middle foreground, a boy is trying to catch a tabby cat. This block was demolished in 1975 and replaced by Greater London Council flats, which were built in 1978-82 by Andrews, Downie & Kelly, the chief architect being David Falla. They also modified their plans because of the Aldgate Burial Ground and built a garden area over it. The modern buildings consist of three blocks of four-storey flats, the lower storeys being in red-brown brick and the upper storeys in grey slate. The Aldgate Burial Ground area was excavated in 2005 and 238 human burials were recorded. The site is now called Royal Mint Place.
