Pub, shops and houses in Salmon Lane
Description
Pub, shops and houses at 51-65 Salmon Lane, Limehouse, viewed from Salmon Lane near Camdenhurst Street looking north-west. From left to right, in the background are some houses then a greengrocery shop on the corner of Salmon Lane and Conder Street with goods displayed outside. There is a man outside the grocery. On the next corner at 53 is the Royal Navy pub which was established in the nineteenth century. It was supplied by Mann’s brewery in Whitechapel; Manns is written on the pub sign. It closed in 1999 and in 2003 was converted into flats, the green-tiled frontage and the style of the windows and door being preserved though it has lost its pub sign and there are now railings round the front to protect it. The windows of the shop at 55 are whitewashed, which indicates closure. The houses from 57 to 65 in the foreground all have arched doorways and windows on the ground floor and there is some fancy brickwork at the top of each of them. All the windows are sash windows. There are railings in front of the houses as they all have an ‘area’ leading down to a lower ground floor. There are also several stabilising metal bolts in a line across all of the houses and two of the houses have lucky horseshoes nailed above their front doors. A man is entering the gate of number 57. Number 65 is on the corner with Camdenhurst Street and at its side there is an advert for the Victoria Tin Box Co Ltd which makes “boxes of all types”. There is also some graffiti saying West Ham. Part of a van parked across the road from the houses can be seen. The grocer’s is now a modern house, as is the shop with whitewashed windows and the houses are now a block of flats. There are railings in front of the modern houses but these are not the original ones. The ‘areas’ have been paved over so that there is now no entry to the lower ground floors from the street.
