Description
Shops and houses at 38-48 Salmon Lane, Limehouse, viewed from Salmon Lane looking south-east . At the right in the foreground there is a man outside house number 48. There is an empty milk bottle on number 48’s doorstep. There is a board outside number 46 that says 160/8, a sign of imminent demolition. There are dustbins outside numbers 46 and 44. The shop at number 42 is E or E O’Brien’s, advertising Typhoo and Lyons tea in its window. The Quality fish and chip shop at 40 is advertising roe and Coca Cola. J Spiro at 38 is a newsagent, tobacconist and confectioner. There are several advertising placards outside the shop, advertising amongst other things Bristol tipped and Players Number 6 cigarettes and Walls ice cream. Above the newsagency can be seen signal lights and an apparatus for the railway. None of these buildings is in existence today. A company called Rope and Marine Services Ltd, lifting gear engineers, occupies the whole block. The block of flats and railway apparatus is still there but the signal lights have gone.
