Shops, pub and warehouses in St George Street
Description
St George Street, Shadwell, viewed from the corner of Cannon Street Road and Ratcliff Highway (now The Highway). On the left at numbers 179-180 is Charles Jamrach’s Animal Emporium. He traded in exotic wild animals and this shop was the largest of its type in the world. He died in 1891 so when this photo was taken his sons William and Albert were running the shop and museum. Albert died in 1917 in World War I and the shop closed in 1919. On the site now is a Co-op store. The shop next door is a pawnbroker’s, identifiable by the three brass balls above its entrance. There is another shop next door to that and the buildings after that are warehouses, as the hoisting poles in their upper windows attest. On the right, in the foreground on the road are four baskets full of fruit. The building near them is the Artichoke pub at number 19. The pub was opened in the 1950s and renamed the Caxton but closed in 2012. A Domino’s pizza shop is now on the site and its address is 50 The Highway. Beyond the pub are more buildings, with ships’ masts just visible behind them, from ships in Tobacco Dock, now an entertainment venue. There are three young women, each holding a baby, sitting on a step outside Jamrach’s, and a boy is standing next to them. Another boy is looking in the shop window and a man in a boater hat is passing the shop. A youth carrying a basket is crossing the road. Outside the pub are four women with two babies and three toddlers and another young woman. There are also four men and near the pub, four naval officers. There is also a horse and cart and near that are two more women with their backs to the camera. There is an animal near the pub but it is not clear if it is a large pigeon or a cat or dog.
