Title
Shops and house in Red Lion Street
Description
Two shops and a house at 80-84 Red Lion Street, Wapping, which was Anchor and Hope Alley (the photo contains both names) at the crossroads where it joins Watts Street, Reardon Street and Tench Street, viewed from Red Lion Street looking south. A Cunningham’s barber shop is shown at 84, with a barber’s pole and there is an advert for R White’s soda water and lemonade on the shop wall at the front. Two men are in the shop doorway. Two women are standing in the doorway of the house at number 82 and a man, youth and policeman are outside the house. Another youth is across the alleyway and there is a woman outside a greengrocer’s shop at number 80. Another woman is standing in Watts Street. All the people are looking in the same direction towards the corner of Tench Street, where there used to be a fire station, which is now a youth club. Between 1926 and 1932, the street was redeveloped as part of London County Council’s Wapping housing scheme. The southern part of Red Lion Street was widened by Stepney Borough Council and in 1938 was renamed Reardon Path; the northern part was renamed Reardon Street. Slum housing was replaced by twelve blocks of flats named after famous sailors and explorers who had sailed out from the East End docks. These flats were renovated during the development phase that began in the 1970s and still exist under their original names. Beechey House, Parry House, Willoughby House and Vancouver House are all in Reardon Path. This part of Red Lion Street/Anchor and Hope Alley is now Reardon Path and the buildings in the picture have been replaced by Beechey House.
