Title
Buildings in Princelet Street
Description
View of front elevations of terraced buildings at 19-25 Princelet Street, Spitalfields. Grade II* listed number 19 Princelet Street was built by Samuel Worrall in 1718 and hosted a number of Huguenot weaver families. From 1862 to 1983 the premises were in use as an orthodox synagogue although the congregation left the building in 1963. The scholar David Rodinsky lived in rooms (pictured here) above the synagogue; Rodinsky disappeared after the congregation had left and his rooms were discovered undisturbed 20 years later. The mystery of David Rodinsky's disappearance is the subject of "Rodinsky's Room" (1999), a non-fiction work by Iain Sinclair and Rachel Lichtenstein. The building was acquired by the Spitalfields Trust in 1980 and is now the Museum of Immigration and Diversity, open just a few days per year. The original synagogue fixtures are still extant although the building is at risk. Listing number 1260421. Numbers 21-25 are Grade II listed; listing number 1065078.
