View of Queen Street
Description
View of buildings in Queen Street, Tower Hill, looking north to Royal Mint Street, with The Hoop and Horseshoe public house to the right, pedestrians and people posing for the photograph. The Hoop and Horseshoe became notorious as the place where the body of Richard Parker, who was hanged from his ship HMS Sandwich off Sheerness in June 1797 for his involvement in the "Nore Mutiny", was brought to by his widow. Police were stationed outside the pub to stop people from breaking in, after which his body was moved to a workhouse in Nightingale Lane (now named Thomas More Street), before being buried in Whitechapel. The pub and Queen Street no longer exist; it used to run south out of Royal Mint Street, roughly where Mansell Street is now.
