Providence Row Night Refuge Home in Crispin Street
Description
View of Providence Row Night Refuge Home at 50 Crispin Street, Spitalfields, on the corner of Artillery Lane. This purpose-built refuge was opened in 1868 by a charity founded by Monsignor Gilbert (1827-95) who was the Vicar-General of the Archdiocese of Westminster and Administrator of Westminster Cathedral. It provided free accommodation for 50 homeless men and 300 women and children. It was co-managed by the Roman Catholic order of the Sisters of Mercy, whose convent home was part of the building together with a primary school. The refuge operated until 1999, after which some of the rear sections of the building were demolished. Since 2006 the building has been known as Lilian Knowles House - so named after the first female Dean of the Economic History Faculty in the University of London - providing student accommodation to postgraduates of the London School of Economics. The sign above the entrance on the left says 'Women'. Vans are parked in front, including one with partly visible 'The Boy[...] Rathbo[..]' logo, possibly' The Boys from Rathbone Street'.
