Title
Lady Cames' Almshouses in Phillipp Street
Description
View of front elevations of Lady Cames' Almshouses at 52-58 Phillipp Street, Hoxton, looking north-west. It is a terrace of four single-storey dwellings set back from the road with a paved yard enclosed by a low wall with iron railings. The doors have a plain arched transom. A faded stone or plaster plaque is visible, possibly indicating these are almshouses? A boy stares at the camera from the pavement and two smaller children lean against the brick gate post. The street is cobbled with large stone setts laid in a stretcher bond pattern. To the left of the terrace is a two storey building at 60 Phillipp Street with wooden shutters on the arched ground-floor window and on the right is a tall brick structure. All of the buildings on the north side of Phillipp Street have since been demolished and redeveloped by the London County Council (LCC) as the Whitmore Estate (built 1924-37, which possibly explains why the picture was taken just before) and the location is currently the rear gardens of Bower House.
