Title
St Benet's Vicarage in Mile End Road
Description
A man with a beard and a long coat stands under a tree at the front of St Benet’s Vicarage, Mile End Road, Mile End. The photograph is taken looking northwards and the side of the People's Palace is just visible. The People's Palace had been opened by Queen Victoria in 1887 but it was destroyed by fire in 1931. The building was rebuilt and reopened in 1937. In 1947 Queen Mary College University of London acquired St Benet’s Church and Vicarage. The church had suffered significant bomb damage and the parish had been abolished. The vicarage was used as offices and lecture rooms until it was demolished in 1961 to make way for a Physics building extension.
