Locksley Estate housing development site
Description
Locksley Estate housing development site, Limehouse, viewed from the corner of Lydbrook and Dixon Streets, looking north-east. On the right is a temporary hut and building rubble. In the centre are new house foundations. On the left are piles of bricks along with some scaffolding. In the background on the left are two-storey houses at 15-27 Clemence Street and one side of the Prince Alfred pub, which is on the corner of Clemence Street at 86 Locksley Street. In the centre is a tall crane and on the right two-storey terraced houses in Locksley Street, including the row from numbers 1-23. In between is the part of Brickfield Gardens that is between Endive Street and Dixon Street, which opened in 1904 on the site of a former brick field and is now part of Mile End Park. Some of its original plane trees are still in situ. The houses at 1-23 Locksley Street still exist and have been renovated and renumbered and their address changed to Copenhagen Place. Clemence Street and Locksley Street are part of the Locksley Estate, where blocks of flats were built in the late 1950s by the London County Council as part of post-war reconstruction then handed over to Tower Hamlets Borough Council. Lydbrook, Dixon and Endive Streets no longer exist. The Prince Alfred, which opened c1863, closed in 2012 with plans to be developed as flats but as yet is still boarded up.
