View of Hackney Road and Goldsmiths Row
Description
A view of the junction of Hackney Road and Goldsmiths Row, Haggerston. On the right, the newsagent shop is at number 1 Goldsmiths Row, a simple two-storey building with a flat roof. There are several posters advertising newspapers on the front of the shop, the windows are full of items for sale, a man stands in the doorway and a saloon car is parked at the kerb. Next door is number 319 Hackney Road, a two-storey building with a mansard roof; a shop with an awning selling cooked meats occupies the ground-floor. Several people pass in front of the shop, and a pushchair stands on the pavement. The four-storey bulding in the centre of the photo is number 311 Hackney Road, a public house called the Three Crowns but also known as west's Brewery Tap; the word Brewery or Brewers appears above the third floor. A lorry, a man with a hand cart and a saloon car can be seen on the left, two men cross the road and several women pass along the pavement. The tall building with quoins still stands but all the other buildings shown were damaged beyond repair by bombing during World War II and the site is now occupied by Hackney City Farm.
