Title
Shop in Black Lion Yard
Description
Number 9 Black Lion Yard, Stepney, L. Elgrod Jewellers shop, with large clock attached to its wall and a man wearing a suit and glasses standing in the doorway. This three-storey building stands alone, with corrugated iron either side surrounding the plots where numbers 1-7 and 11-21 once stood. There is a van parked on the road. This narrow thoroughfare, named after the Black Lion Inn which is mentioned by Charles Dickens in 'Barnaby Rudge', became known for its jewellers and described as the 'Hatton Garden of the East End'. Earmarked for clearance in 1966, despite petitions and media coverage Black Lion Yard was demolished between 1972 and 1975. Housing now occupies the site of Black Lion Yard, and what was its junction with Whitechapel Road is occupied by the NatWest Bank branch in the East London Works.
