Description
A view looking north up Back Church Lane, Stepney, from Fairclough Street towards Commercial Road, with a warehouse on the west side and cars parked in the road. The warehouse has since been demolished and replaced with flats. Number 129 Back Church Lane is the site where once stood Premierland, one of the premier boxing venues in London. Built around 1906 as The Peoples Arcade entertainment venue, it was renamed Premierland ('Preemier land') in 1911. It included a boxing ring where many East End boxers, many of them Jewish, began their careers, Ted 'Kid' Lewis and Jack 'Kid' Berg among them.
